OK Humane to border Lower Park

It was just over a year ago that we had a successful opening weekend for Scissortail Park with fireworks, concerts and food trucks. Last Friday, we marked another important MAPS 3 milestone with the groundbreaking of the second portion of the park.

Once completed in the spring of 2022, the southern half will add 30 acres to Scissortail Park. The Lower Park is designed to have more open and natural spaces than the Upper Park with paved paths, native gardens, a hollow, and an overlook hill. It will offer multiple sport facilities, including a soccer field, sports pavilion, a children’s play area, four pickleball courts, a futsal court and two basketball courts. The expansion also will have a trail, a promenade and plaza.

The Oklahoma Humane Society was approved as a first new development bordering the Lower Park. The land, owned by the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority, is located on the southwest corner of SW 10th Street and Harvey Parkway, across Harvey from the Lower Park.

The new pet adoption facility will include space for the dogs and cats to play, walk and be viewed by prospective adopting families. The $20 million campus also will include an education center, office space and conference room and can accommodate future expansion. The organization, recently renamed OK Humane, is launching a fundraising campaign to bring its operations, currently spread across four locations, together into the campus of its dreams sometime in 2022. OCURA has designated OK Humane as the conditional redeveloper and is working toward a full development agreement.
