Grocery store offers healthy options

Residents in northeast Oklahoma City are experiencing the benefits of the newly developed Northeast Shopping Center at NE 36th Street and N. Kelley Avenue. The Save-A-Lot grocery store recently opened its doors, providing access to fresh food and groceries for residents in the area.

It may seem odd to think that residents in any large metropolitan city would have trouble accessing fresh food and groceries, but food deserts are common in many U.S. cities and create a barrier for families who need convenient access to fresh fruits, vegetables and meat. For years, the northeast section of Oklahoma City has been a U.S. Department of Agriculture-defined food desert, meaning that a high percentage of residents live more than 1 mile from a supermarket or large grocery store. Until now, their only grocery options were limited to convenience stores, or required traveling longer distances. The Save-A-Lot store is a constructive step toward providing healthy and accessible food options.
